Podcast #5: What Travel Guide Category should you write in?

Not all travel guide categories are created equal. Before you start writing a travel guide, it will save you time in the long run if you evaluate what type of travel guide you want to write. The skills and information need to write a destination guide are vastly different than writing a special interest travel guide. It’s always a good idea to write what you know, so if you only have a broad knowledge of a destination, but have a in-depth knowledge of all the sports activities in your town, it would be quicker and more efficient to write a special interest travel guide to showcase your expertise.

The key to writing any book is to know your audience, and you can’t pinpoint who you’re writing for, until you decided what your knowledge and research skills are, which will help you choose your travel guide category. By approaching your writing process in the optimal order, you’ll spend more time creating new content, and less time reworking or abandoning content that isn’t applicable to your category and target audience.

In this podcast episode we cover:

  • An overview of traditional travel guide publishers and how they approach their travel guide topics.
  • An introduction to the major travel guide categories: Destination, Side Trip, Special Interest, Event Specific, Journey, Culinary, and Advice Travel Guides.
  • A look at the key considerations when writing each of these travel guide categories.

Are you ready to establish your subject matter expertise and earn passive income by transitioning from travel blogger to author of your own travel book, but don’t know where to start? Do you have a travel guide, travel memoir, or travel book bubbling inside?
