Build your Travel Blog Community with Blog Commenting

Growing your Blogger Community

I’ve always been a fan of blogs, and when I’m planning a trip I always search blogs to get ideas, inspiration, and information to help me plan my trip. I find that blogs often have unique and quirky insights that you wouldn’t find in a travel guide. But prior to the Covid-19 outbreak I didn’t spend a lot of time reading other blogs unless I needed information for my travel.

But earlier this year I had more time on my hands, and wasn’t traveling so much so I started participating in blog commenting threads for my personal travel blog Roving Jay. Now I’m a voracious reader of other travel blogs, and I’ve discovered bloggers I want to follow on social media and collaborate with. Through these blog commenting activities I’ve found travel bloggers to write a guest blog post for and have contributed to their round up posts.

If I wasn’t an active blog commenter, I wouldn’t read as many travel blogs. I’ve been introduced me to different travel destinations, and it’s made me enthusiastic to visit places that hadn’t previously been on my list.

Blog Commenting

All the groups I participate in require Meaningful Comments, and you can only leave those if you read the blog post. I’ve participated in all of the groups below and 99% of the time the comment is thoughtful, meaningful, and adds value to my article. The blogger either leaves their own personal insight to the blog post, or they add an additional bit of information about the destination or topic my article covers.

These threads are a way to support your follow travel blogger, and even though it takes time and effort to read blog posts and leave a meaningful comment. It’s worth the time investment.

Run a Mile from Spam

Not all blogging threads are created equal. There are a lot of spammy blog commenting groups that I tried as part of my research for this article, and if you participate in those, you’ll get a load of useless and mindless blog comments. These events tend to be generic blog thread events, e.g. participants could have any type of blog and write on any topic.

So the #1 most important consideration is that you choose a comment thread within your niche. So as a travel blogger, only participate in travel blog commenting threads with other travel bloggers.

SEO Benefits of Blog Comments – Referral Traffic

When you leave a comment, most of the time you get the option of adding your website URL, so if anyone clicks on your name on the comment, it’ll take them to your website. On my blog I also use the Comment Luv plugin, so that the commenter is presented with a list of their most recent posts, and it’ll appear under their blog comment, and this link is in addition to the live link on the commenter’s name.

These links are no-follow for bots. Which means that when search engine bots crawl the page, they ignore these links and don’t follow them. So from an SEO perspective they may not add SEO link juice for the commenter, but I know that when I’m reading an article and I read a useful or informative comment from another blogger, I’ll often click on their website link and follow it to their website. So these links are a useful way of getting referral traffic. This is just one more reason why commenters benefit from leaving a meaningful comment.

SEO Benefits of Blog Comments – Reducing Bounce Rate

When people stay on your article to read it in full before the comment, these longer stays can help to reduce your website’s bounce rate. We all get traffic on our website where visitors stay for only a couple of seconds. Usually this is because they land on your site and then realize it’s not relevant, so click away. But in order to leave a comment, your visitors have to stay longer, and these visits are beneficial from a SEO perspective.

Social Proof

Another benefit of comments on your blog posts is the social proof it provides. Nobody likes to be the first one to leave a comment on a blog post. And if you’re trying to attract organic blog comments onto your posts, it’ll be difficult to attract more, until you get a few. But once you have a group of blog comments on your post, the herd mentality kicks in, and comments attract more comments. Also, for any non-bloggers reading your website, they’ll see all your comments and give your article’s importance more weight because of its popularity. These are useful when you’re building your following.

Make time for Blog Commenting

When you’re a travel blogger juggling content creation tasks and building your audience across social media it’s very easy to get to focused on your own environment, and you stop reaching out to other bloggers to see what they’re doing with their blogs and what they’re writing about. But events, like blog commenting threads, encourage you to explore other travel blogs on the internet to inspire your next travel destination, and can help you identify collaboration opportunities with other travel bloggers.

Make sure you participate for the right reasons and with integrity.

  • Participate to get inspired by other travel bloggers and build collaborative relationships with those within your niche
  • Read the articles in full before you comment
  • Leave a meaningful comment, and here’s some prompts to get you thinking:
    • Did this article inspire you in some way?
    • If you’ve visited the destination did you learn something new, or do you have different information to add?
    • Did this article trigger a personal memory about a similar experience?
    • Did you learn something new?

Here’s the groups that attract good quality travel blogging comments:

  7. I often thought about why commenting on blogs is an important marketing strategy. What I found was a lot of marketers forget about this great way to drive high-quality, targeted traffic. If you’re looking for a boost in blog readership and social media sharing, comments are your answer!
In fact, it’s been said that 42% of people who read blogs only comment about 1/3 of the time. So in reality, bloggers are missing out on a large percentage of potential readership.
I was always taught when it comes to blogging to make sure you do everything in your power to drive traffic back to your site. After all, increased exposure is increased exposure! But how many people are doing this effectively?
