How can switching Amazon Categories improve my book’s credibility? Here’s an example of a category switch than took me from rank #370 to #20 in a more relevant category.

My Freewriting for Travel Writers book was in the following three categories. My book was ranked low in each of the three categories.

  4. #1037 in Books > Reference > Writing, Research & Publishing Guides > Writing > Travel

I researched a better category and sent a request to Amazon and asked them to add me to the Writing, Research & Publishing Guides > Nonfiction category instead, and within 24 hours my book was moved to the Nonfiction category where my book was ranked #36.

The next day I sold just one book, my best seller rank dropped in half and I made the top 20 in the Nonfiction category: 

  1. Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #96,998 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)
  2. #20 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Reference > Writing, Research & Publishing Guides > Nonfiction
  3. #177 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Reference > Writing, Research & Publishing Guides > Writing Skills
  4. #495 in Books > Reference > Writing, Research & Publishing Guides > Writing > Writing Skills

The Impact:

  • I switched out of the Writing Skills category where I was ranked #370 (so I didn’t even appear on the Top 200 listed books), and requested a move to the Nonfiction category.
  • After getting into the new category I was ranked #36 (so appeared on the second page of the search results).
  • After selling just one book, I entered the first page of search results at rank #20.

So this one simple request has catapulted my book to a search results page giving it greater visibility within a niche populated with other books on the same topic.
