About

Birds of a Feather Press

Jay Artale headshotI'm Jay Artale and I launched Birds of a Feather Press in 2016. It's an indie author resource site for nonfiction authors.

When I published my first book back in 2013 I struggled with every aspect of the self-publishing process. I didn't know where to start, and I was worried about making a publishing mistake that I'd live to regret.

I started my author journey writing travel guides, and now I write How-To books to encourage and inspire writers with an independent spirit to write and publish their own books.

Self-publishing has changed dramatically since I published my first book, and the publishing and distribution choices at your fingertips are varied and easy to access. But that choice can also be overwhelming.

The intent of this website is to help guide you in the right direction, and give you the confidence to take your manuscript and become a self-published author.

You can read more about my indie author journey, self-publishing experience and author affiliations by visiting my Jay Artale About Page, and the Media and Press Page.

Help is at Hand

I write travel guides and nonfiction writing guides aimed at travel writers and travel bloggers, and launched this independent self-publishing press to publish my non-fiction books and those from other like-minded authors and travel writers.

Do you have a travel guide, travel memoir, or nonfiction book in the travel niche bubbling inside you with itchy feet? Set it free! I love helping other travel bloggers and writers to achieve their self-publishing dreams. If you have a question about writing or self-publishing, just get in touch.

Don't let fear of confusion get in your way of achieving your goals of becoming an author and selling your first book.

Getting your book into your reader's hands is a multifaceted process. It starts with writing and editing, before ebbing into design, production and distribution. Then just when you thought you could take a break ... that's when the marketing and promotion begins!

It's all too easy to get overwhelmed by the self-publishing process. But don't worry. I'm here to help you along the journey, and together we can plot your route and get you to your destination.

Check out the articles on this website for information about writing, self-publishing and marketing your  book. I also host a twice monthly podcast, called How Travel Writers Self-Publish, where I share invaluable tips for nonfiction authors.

  5. Dear Jay,

How much do you charge to format a poetry book to be placed on Amazon as an E-book? I am also considering Liberwriter to do my formatting. Would you recommend them? Having written somewhere around 1,500 poems during the past seventeen years as a retired psychologist, I will likely be publishing twelve books of poetry, each with somewhere around seventy or so poems per book. You might keep that in mind quoting the cost of formatting the books.

Thank you, and I will be looking for to hearing from you.
